Undergraduate program

The Red Meat Industry Undergraduate Program is a structured summer vacation work opportunity offered by MLA and AMPC.

The program is an exciting opportunity for students to benefit from 'hands on' application of their technical training and to gain an understanding of the opportunities available in this innovative and dynamic industry.

MLA has assisted in excess of one hundred undergraduates in similar programs over the last seven years and anticipates assisting many more into the future.

Program overview

The program is conducted over the 12-13 week summer university break. The program runs in three stages:

  • Induction - Selected students spend a week at MLA and receive an introduction to the red meat industry and overview of the support available to them from MLA. Students are also introduced to their mentors and the early plans of the projects are scoped.
  • On-site - Students spend their summer vacation at their allocated company site working on the individual site projects. At the end of week four, a mid-program meeting is held and students are required to prepare and present a preliminary report, outlining project progress and identifying any issues.
  • Final preparation - Students finalise reports and presentations in preparation for final delivery.

Eligibility

To be eligible for this program students must be enrolled in the penultimate year of a technical university qualification that is relevant to the red meat industry and have an interest in embarking on a career in the red meat industry.

Project fields

The program encompasses a wide variety of project topics and students from a broad array of degrees are able to participate. Students are encouraged to enquire if they are interested but wish to clarify if their chosen field of study is eligible for the program.

Participating companies

Participating companies are part of a program that introduces them to the benefits of professional capability, providing a direct application of a professional discipline to improve operations on a site. Projects conducted by a student must be specific to the site and must focus on current or important issues.

MLA works with the participating company to scope the project so that it is clearly focused and structured to fit the allocated time frame.

Companies contribute to the program funding and this is matched by MLA through the MLA Donor Company funding mechanism.

Register interest

MLA is seeking university students across Australia to participate in a vacation work program in the red meat industry. Companies interested in participating in the Undergraduate Program are also required.
