Graduate Program Projects

The MLA Graduate Program is a three-year program that provides graduates with an opportunity to work in the multi billion dollar red meat industry.  The aim of the program is to provide young professional graduates with a broad exposure to the red meat industry, in addition to gaining specialist skills and training to develop a career with an exciting and increasingly innovative industry. The program benefits new graduates by providing a strong support structure and long term employment guarantees. This will allow successful applicants to deliver all the required outcomes of the program and to offer value for money to their employees and the industry.

The need to encourage and foster young people into the red meat industry has been high on the agenda for some years and to assist with recruiting more young professionals into the industry, MLA launched the Red Meat Industry Professional Development Program in April 2006.

Industry as a whole benefits by having recently graduated professional personnel trained and supported specifically for the red meat industry.  The program aims to bridge the gap between professional training and industry understanding at the "grass roots" level to achieve effective outcomes faster.

The program provides graduates and their companies' assistance with employment, external networking activities, mentoring and professional development.

Graduates must provide or undertake the following on an annual basis:

  • Provide a Quarterly Report to MLA outlining key work activities; key challenges and opportunities; project status and update; learning and development plan status and progress; and comments form the Manager
  • Provide a half-yearly Learning and Development Plan to identify and assess future developmental needs in required competency areas and to provide structured learning experiences linked to organisational needs, goals, and job requirements
  • Attend half-yearly Professional Development Sessions
  • Undertake at least one industry R&D project per year that adds value both to their company and to their own skill base. The Graduate must complete progress and final reports for every project and also present their R&D project to other Graduates at Professional Development Week
  • Each graduate will be allocated a mentor to provide valuable knowledge, experience, advice and support on matters related to the company, the industry, career development and their R&D project - each Mentor must report to MLA on the progress of their Graduate
