Attraction and retention

The red meat industry in Australia is experiencing difficulties in attracting and retaining skilled effective workers. Many in the industry are spending a considerable amount of time and resources advertising, recruiting and training, however there is a significantly high turnover.

Although the Australian red meat industry has enormous potential to expand both nationally and internationally there are many aspects that create concern. A long term, sustainable, industry wide approach is necessary to enable this dynamic industry to grow productively.

MLA have taken a strategic approach to addressing attraction and retention issues by undertaking a high level of industry and external consultation to develop a long-term strategy that aims to ensure sustainable, practical solutions.

MLA is currently involved in a range of initiatives to provide practical solutions for the industry:

  • Attraction and Retention Strategy
    In an effort to affect the attraction and retention issues effectively, MLA in consultation with industry have developed a strategy which aims to assist industry to undertake initiatives to formulate long, term sustainable changes.
  • Cost of Turnover
    When considering the cost of turnover it is important to consider the resources that go into attracting, recruiting and training the person to a level at which they are competent in the industry as well as considering the effect on the business and employees when that person leaves.
  • MLA Initiatives
    MLA is currently working in partnership with industry groups, state government bodies and individual sites to bring practical solutions to the industry.
