Bioactives

Increasingly, bioactive components derived from food and plant products are being used in functional foods, pet foods, pharmaceuticals for humans and animals, nutraceuticals and as functional ingredients in cosmetics and biopharmaceutical manufacturing.

To assist processors take advantage of opportunities for bioactives, MLA's High Value Bioactives Program has been implemented to identify and commercialise high value bioactives.

High Value Bioactives Program

The program is designed to enhance the industry’s productivity and sustainability through the development of products from the value-adding processing.

The program has a number of research and development (R&D) strategies including:

  • Identification of market opportunities for bioactives
  • Facilitation of supply chain development, market access and regulatory approval processes
  • Facilitation of application of novel technologies to the production of bioactives
  • Development of novel technologies for the development of bioactives from red meat

Bioactives Bulletin

MLA's Bioactives Bulletin provides the industry with relevant business development activities and opportunities for red meat bioactives. It also provides an overview of key outcomes from MLA's High Value Bioactives Program.

MLA Bioactives Bulletin June 2006

MLA has been running a series of workshops for the red meat industry and associated value adders, addressing the issues in developing bioactives opportunities. The focus to-date has been on the market opportunities, strategies for project selection and tools for estimating cost of production.
