The skin is one of the major sources of carcase contamination and is also a valuable co-product. As such, it is important to keep the skins clean prior to skinning and remove the hide efficiently and with minimal damage.
MLA's Initiatives
MLA's research and development during the skin removal and preparation phases included areas such as:
- Gas depelting
- Automated Y-cutting
- Weasand rodding and bung tying
- Skin removal
MLA also investigates procedures to improve or assure the occupational health and safety of staff involved in the skinning and preparation of carcases.
